Tyler Morning Telegraph story: Edmundo and Levi Fuentes have done a lot together over the years as father and son. Tuesday evening, the 46-year-old father and 20-year-old son walked across the stage with 66 other graduates in the Tyler Junior College gymnasium to receive their GED diplomas. Tyler Morning Telegraph story: When Maria Araujo came to the United States from Mexico at the age of 16 with her family, she didn’t want to be in school. Her father enrolled her at John Tyler High School, where in her own words she pretty much cried all day because she couldn’t speak English. She begged her father to let her drop out of school and work for him in whatever capacity he needed, but he wouldn’t let her. Through a friend, Ms. Araujo, who is now 30, learned about the Literacy Council of Tyler and started attending English classes at night after school. Click here to read the story.

The Literacy Council’s mission is to improve the lives of individuals and their families by eliminating illiteracy through educational services. Literacy Council of Tyler is the proud recipient of a $10,000 grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation. This grant helps to support the 21 families in our Family Literacy Program at the Family Learning Center of Tyler.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2013, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation is proud to support initiatives that help others improve their lives through literacy and education. Since its inception in 1993, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation has awarded more than $81 million in grants to nonprofit organizations, helping more than 4.7 million individuals take their first steps toward literacy or continued education.

Literacy Council of Tyler is the proud recipient of a 2013 Women’s Fund grant of $30,000.  This funding will be used for 30 women to complete their GED, complete Certified Nurse Aide Training, complete Computer Training and complete  Interview Skills Training.

This program will empower 30 women to be ready for the workforce in 6-12 months with the training and credentialing necessary to become quickly employed. Thank you Women’s Fund for helping our female students. When you educate a woman, you educate a family.
